Event Description

On May 30th, the Santa Fe Watershed Association’s River Stewards and volunteers from the community will join tens of thousands of volunteers across the country who will participate in National River Cleanup. National River Cleanup is a series of community-based river cleanings happening throughout the country sponsored by American Rivers, a national non-profit conservation organization The Santa Fe Watershed Association has joined in this nationwide effort.

Santa Fe Watershed Association Executive Director, David Groenfeldt states: "A clean river is a healthy river. The National River Cleanup event helps to raise public awareness of the magnitude of trash accumulation in our nation's rivers". Santa Fe's Adopt-the-River Coordinator, Mikki Anaya adds: "Organizing a river cleanup is a good way to reconnect family, friends and neighbors with the river in our own backyard, and keeping the Santa Fe River clean is one way that we all can show our care and concern for the River, which for the past 400 years has been the heart of our community".

Volunteers are invited to pre-register by calling the Santa Fe Watershed Association office at or via email at or simply show up at Alto Park, located at 1043 Alto Street May 30th, any time after 10 am. We will assign volunteers to various stretches of the river. Our goal is to have enough volunteers so that the entire Santa Fe River from upper canyon to Highway 599 is cleaned.

The May 30th All River Cleanup is being conducted in preparation for the River Festival and Fishing Derby which will take place the following Saturday, June 6th, For additional information regarding the All River Cleanup or the 2009 River Festival and Fishing Derby see the Santa Fe Watershed website.

The Adopt-the-River Stewards

In 2001 the Santa Fe Watershed Association initiated an Adopt-the-River program. Stewards who are generally schools, neighborhood associations and community groups, enter into year-long commitments to keep their stretch of the river free of trash and graffiti and lined with native vegetation. In appreciation and recognition for their volunteer work, a sign with the name of the Steward is placed on their adopted stretch of the River. Furthermore, through regular visits to the River, Steward groups become familiar with problems and with potential, and help to advocate for the restoration of the Santa Fe River. To sign up as a River Sponsor or River Steward,
