A local's Copenhagen view Posted by Staci Matlock on December 18, 2009 at 2:36pm in Copenhagen View Discussions Ken Hughes, a Santa Fean who attended the climate change conference as part of the Sierra Club national group, is back and called the trip "amazing." here's some of his pictures and videos from the trip: Replies to This Discussion Permalink Reply by billp37 on January 2, 2010 at 3:20pm Subject: Founder of the Weather Channel on Global Warming Watch and listen to John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, concerning "global warming". He is a REAL expert explaining the fallacy of the concept of "global warming"!!! Please share with those others Permalink Reply by Staci Matlock on January 4, 2010 at 8:53am Hi ya Bill, note that most of my references are to "climate change", NOT global warming. Climate change has always occurred through the earth's history. The problem is that it appears to be changing more rapidly now due to human influences as compared to the pace of change in the past. Climate scientists I have spoken with say some places may benefit from warmer, wetter weather due to the change; other areas will experience more drought. Some may even be colder. It is the rapid pace of change that makes it hard for species to adjust, including humans. Obviously the debate still rages over the PRIMARY cause of climate change. People such as Coleman say humans aren't the primary cause. But hundreds of climate scientists say we are. They also concur solar flaring and other factors contribute to climate change. So perhaps it is a matter of what's prompted the tipping point in climate change. All other factors being equal (there have long been solar flares), then can the increase in CO2, methane and other GG gases attributable to the industrial age be what is tipping us over? I agree after talking to economist Tom Casten that a carbon tax may not do what it's proponents hope. But the bigger reason to move away from non-renewable, fossil fuels is that they are finite. They will run out. Why not plan for a transition now to a non-fossil fuel economy so that regardless of who's right about climate change we don't get caught with our proverbial pants down as fossil fuel prices rise due to decreasing supply? I believe you sent it to Drew who said we should not listen to an obscure Australian scientist. Carbon footprints and carbon taxes because of "global warming" are a fraud being perpertrated by governments in order to raise taxes based on our energy consumption. The UN is all for it because the developed nations (ie the US and Europe) will have to give developing countries (ie everybody else including China and India) hundreds of billions of dollars for having caused global warming. It is an amazing rip off that a lot of young people believe because they have been brainwashed at our schools and universities. AS for polar bears, they are thriving to the point that Canada issues 500 hunting licenses a year to shoot polar bears. But our (un)enlightened and (un)educated press appears to be unaware of any of this because it does not fit their agenda and what they print. Photo of John on this page. However, if you repeat a lie/falsehood/bad data often enough, it becomes fact, and that is exactly what the anti-hunters/eco turds have done. What more can I say? As you well note and we agree on, the global warming fraud is exactly that, and the Democrat Dept. of Education, in effect since the 1060's, has dumbed down the public to the point that they will believe almost anything someone tells them. As an example, ask around about the Humane Soc of the US (HSUS). MOST citizens on the street think the organization runs/supports animal shelters. Yet, the HSUS runs not a single shelter, and spend most of its $99MILLION budget on anti- shit. So it goes. Maybe someday Wayne Pacell will walk across the 100-yd range as I pull the trigger. Dr Tim Palmer, Permalink Reply by Staci Matlock on January 4, 2010 at 9:01am If this is the same Tim Palmer who wrote the 1999 Heart of America, it seems an interesting change of heart on his part. This from Polar Bear International: Yes polar bear populations are at 20,000 to 25,000 now. (Palmer says that's more than in the last 100 years but doesn't give you a comparison.) But if the sea ice is melting at a rate more rapid now than scientists predicted even five years ago, will the bears have time to adjust? "Polar bears are a potentially endangered species living in the circumpolar north. They are animals which know no boundaries. They pad across the ice from Russia to Alaska, from Canada to Greenland and onto Norway's Svalbard archipelago. Biologists estimate that there are 20,000 to 25,000 bears with about sixty percent of those living in Canada. The main threat to polar bears today is the loss of their icy habitat due to climate change. Polar bears depend on the sea ice for hunting, breeding, and in some cases to den. The summer ice loss in the Arctic is now equal to an area the size of Alaska, Texas, and the state of Washington combined. At the most recent meeting of the IUCN Polar Bear Specialist Group(Copenhagen, 2009), scientists reported that of the 19 subpopulations of polar bears, eight are declining, three are stable, one is increasing, and seven have insufficient data on which to base a decision—this is a change from five that were declining in 2005, five that were stable, and two that were increasing. During the meeting, delegates renewed their conclusion from previous meetings that the greatest conservation challenge to the polar bear is ecological change in the Arctic related to climate warming. On May 14, 2008, the U.S. Department of the Interior reclassified the polar bear as a Threatened Species under the Endangered Species Act, citing concerns about sea ice loss. Russia lists the polar bear as a species of concern." Permalink Reply by Staci Matlock on January 4, 2010 at 9:18am BTW: If you look at the HSUS Web site, it does not claim to run any animal shelters. The confusion therefore is on the part of the public - HSUS clearly states it is an "animal protection" group that works through legislation, rescue, etc. The confusion isn't helped by the fact that each state has HSUS offices, sometimes co-housed at animal shelters or a shelter is an HSUS affiliate.. ie. Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society. Permalink Reply by billp37 on January 6, 2010 at 7:16am The revelation of ClimateÂgate occurs at a time when the accuracy of the climate models is being seriously questioned. Over the last decade Earth's temperature has not warmed, yet every model (there are many) predicted a significant increase in global temperatures for that time period. If the climate models cannot get it right for the past 10 years, why should we trust them for the next century? Climategate reveals how predetermined political agendas shaped science rather than the other way around. It is high time to question the true agenda of the scientists now on the hot seat and to bring skeptics back into the public debate. The bitter winter afflicting much of the Northern Hemisphere is only the start of a global trend towards cooler weather that is likely to last for 20 or 30 years, say some of the world's most eminent climate scientists. Their predictions – based on an analysis of natural cycles in water temperatures in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans – challenge some of the global warming orthodoxy's most deeply cherished beliefs, such as the claim that the North Pole will be free of ice in summer by 2013.
