Baby it's hot out there Posted by Staci Matlock on January 26, 2010 at 10:19am in Climate change View Discussions E-mails aside, a new report out of NASA claims the last decade was the hottest on on record and 2009 tied with six other years (all but one post-2000) for the second hottest year on record. That's global average temperature. Replies to This Discussion Permalink Reply by billp37 on February 15, 2010 at 7:02pm Do you realize that CO2 emissions created by man's activities, combustion of fuels, etc. (called anthropogenic emissions) is miniscule compared to the emissions of CO2 from nature? Table 1 was developed by the IPCC. It shows annual CO2 emissions to the atmosphere from both nature and man and how much of the CO2 emitted is re-absorbed by nature. Permalink Reply by Bonney Hughes on March 7, 2010 at 6:25pm This is a common and misleading argument used by those denying that climate change is caused by humans. While more CO2 is emitted from nature, nature absorbs slightly more greenhouse gas that it emits. The problem is the emissions from fossil fuels that humans produce, since 60% of these are not absorbed by nature and continue to build up in the atmosphere. See this site for a detailed explanation: The vast majority of climate scientists and other experts agree that climate change is real, is caused by humans, and requires quick action Permalink Reply by Alan Gregory on March 8, 2010 at 8:09am Bonney is correct. Global warming, i.e., the changing our our planet's climate, is caused by human activities, principally the intentional burning of fossil fuels, especially coal. As a retired Air Force officer, I can also testify -- as other veterans and military retirees are doing -- that there are national security issues at play in the climate-change scenario. I served, as thousands of other Air Force airmen and women did, in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s (operation ELF-One) to protect Saudi oilfields. Now there is no infinite nougat of oil deep within the Earth for humans to tap. We'd better figure out another way to get around and do it now. And walking or bicycling are among the best ways -- no pollution while burning calories.
