Sustainability is attitude and action combined - an attitude of awareness and mindful action. This calls for self -examination in relationship to the world around us - with engaged concern for all those we live with - all sorts of critters as well as humans and the environment which supports this all.
What do you do to try and live green and what would you like to learn more about?
I am conscious about my water and energy use on a daily basis and attempt to learn more, to perfect my skills, to work with people on these issues and to plan ahead: I use less water because I capture and reuse water; I am capable of driving my car mindfully, which means not only observing speed limits or driving more slowly, but also "coasting," being aware of contours/grades along the way - it's fun & I can improve my gas mileage. I'm walking more, have been using my bicycle. Last summer, I used "natural cooling" opening windows at night, drawing coverings over windows in the heat of the day, etc. I've joined a community garden, am developing the very small space at home for more garden, and have been looking at ways to conserve water: mulch, compost, choosing certain varieties and companion planting.
What concerns you most about the issues facing the environment, whether locally or globally?
My concern is that we have no extra time, no time to lose and that all of us need to be engaged in whatever ways we are capable of to stem the degradation of the earth's environment(s). I am also heartened by the increasing attention people are directing toward global warming and particularly by the brilliant proposal that Ed Mazria and his people have put forward in what is known as The 2030 Challenge.com
